Bluestone Lake in Summers, Monroe, and Mercer Counties, West Virginia
This lake has 8 Layers or 15 Layers for HD Version
Bluestone Lake is a 2,040-acre flood control reservoir on the New River in southern West Virginia, spanning portions of Summers, Monroe, and Mercer Counties near the historic town of Hinton. Formed by the Bluestone Dam — a concrete gravity dam completed in the 1940s by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers — the lake impounds a 10.7-mile stretch of the New River and its tributary, the Bluestone River, and ranks as West Virginia's third largest body of water. Anglers find excellent fishing for Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass, Muskellunge, Walleye, Striped Bass, Crappie, Rock Bass, Catfish, and Trout across the lake's forested coves and rocky shoreline, while the Bluestone Wildlife Management Area's 18,758 acres of surrounding public land offers some of the finest wild turkey, deer, and waterfowl habitat in the entire Appalachian region
Bluestone Lake lies at the heart of one of the most spectacular recreational corridors in the eastern United States, surrounded by Bluestone State Park, Bluestone Wildlife Management Area, and Pipestem Resort State Park — all within a short drive of New River Gorge National Park, America's newest national park established in 2020. The confluence of the New and Bluestone Rivers at the lake's upper end creates a stunning natural landscape of steep forested gorges, ancient Appalachian ridgelines, and clear mountain water. The area has a profound indigenous heritage — the Bluestone River was known as "Momongosenka" (Big Stone River) by Native peoples — adding a rich layer of cultural history to its wild beauty
A laser-cut wooden map of Bluestone Lake makes a stunning and distinctive piece of wall art for any Appalachian cabin, mountain retreat, or West Virginia home. The natural wood top layer traces the lake's rugged, river-carved shoreline and tributary arms with remarkable detail, while the light-to-dark blue gradient water layers beautifully capture the lake's depth and character. Whether displayed above a fireplace or in a great room, this handcrafted map is a timeless tribute to one of West Virginia's most scenic and storied lakes — in Almost Heaven, West Virginia
